During the first meeting of the Best Dressed Women of the Philippines 2014, the committee showed us videos of their past events. I had never been to the Philippine Cancer Society Ball before so I was pretty clueless about everything. I thought we were just going to attend the event and receive our Best Dressed award. I didn’t know we were going to be part of the show! I can still remember Tita Sandie Poblador (Selection and Organizing Comittee) playing the video of last year’s event and mentioned that the color this year was going to be red. She said, “You all have to wear red, not just any kind of red but lipstick red or Valentino red for the fashion show.” OMG… when I heard “fashion show”, I died! I literally sank into my seat, palpitating, sweating and figuring out how I was going to wiggle my way out of it. I’m not a model. I don’t look like one much less walk like one..
There was no turning back and I just had to power through the event specifically the fashion show (with an amazing gown, of course!). It took me a few weeks to finally figure out the look I wanted – all I knew was it had to be different! I wanted something that I wouldn’t or couldn’t be able to wear to any other event. I didn’t do the traditional debut when I turned 18 nor did I wear a big ball gown for my wedding so I figured since I was going to a ball and was going to be awarded as Best Dressed Woman of the Philippines, my gown had to be big, VERY BIG! And I knew the perfect designer to go to execute the look I had envisioned… Manila’s fashion genius – Rajo Laurel!
As soon as I told Rajo about the Philippine Cancer Society’s requirements and my vision, his creative juices started flowing and he worked his magic. He created a dress for me like no other. My ball gown was a good mix of the 1700’s but updated to be modern, very chic and BIG! I love how he mixed the Marie Antoinette silhouette with neoprene fabric and just the right about of sparkle.
My Best Dressed Women of the Philippines 2014 ball gown is my favorite gown of all time. It made me feel like a princess, even if I couldn’t walk like one. Hahaha! (Inside joke.. it’s one of those moments that you just had to be there! Lets just say that in hindsight, I should’ve practiced. But thank goodness, I didn’t fall!)
